SAM.gov Missing NAICS Codes: What Contractors Should Do

by | Jul 28, 2026

UPDATE (July 28, 2026): Since reports of this issue first surfaced, SAM.gov has confirmed that the system error has been corrected. The issue affected certain entity registration renewals submitted between March 24 and July 22, 2026. Impacted entities will receive an email titled “Action Required: SAM.gov NAICS Code Size Table Discrepancy” with instructions on any required next steps. Contractors should still review their registrations to confirm all information is accurate.

What Is Happening in SAM.gov?

Government contractors are encouraged to review their SAM.gov registrations after SAM.gov identified a system error affecting certain entity registration renewals. The issue may have resulted in missing or incorrect registration information, including NAICS codes, employee counts, average annual receipts, or incorrectly computed NAICS size standards. These inaccuracies could affect small business size determinations, proposal evaluations, and contract awards.

Contractors should log into SAM.gov and review their entity registration for missing NAICS codes, employee counts, and annual receipts. If any of these fields are blank or inaccurate, they should be reviewed and corrected as soon as possible. Although some contractors initially described the issue as a SAM.gov “glitch,” SAM.gov has since confirmed the system error and issued guidance to affected entities.

Why Missing NAICS Codes Matter

Missing NAICS codes can affect much more than profile completeness. Contracting officers frequently review SAM registrations during responsibility determinations, proposal evaluations, and award decisions. GSA contracting officers also compare NAICS alignment when reviewing Multiple Award Schedule offers and contract modifications. An incomplete registration can create unnecessary questions, delays, or requests for clarification.

NAICS codes also drive visibility in searches and help establish alignment with solicitations or GSA Schedule Special Item Numbers (SINs). Employee count and average annual receipts are key inputs for small business size determinations. Missing or inaccurate registration data can also impact how agencies identify potential vendors during market research and may delay responsibility determinations during source selections.

What to Do if Your NAICS Codes Are Missing

  1. Review Your Profile: Log into SAM.gov and carefully check the Core Data/Goods & Services/Assertions sections for NAICS codes, along with business size fields for employee count and receipts.
  2. Submit an Update Immediately: Start an “Update Entity” process. Re-enter accurate NAICS codes (including the primary NAICS and all applicable secondary NAICS codes), verify employee counts, annual receipts, and review other registration data before submitting the update. The registration typically remains active during review.
  3. Document the Process: Take screenshots of the issue and corrections. Retain all confirmation emails.
  4. Contact Support if Needed: If data re-disappears or updates fail, submit a ticket to the Federal Service Desk (fsd.gov). Reference the recent data loss for priority handling.
  5. Notify Contracting Officers: For pending bids or recent rejections tied to missing data, reach out promptly. Confirm the update has been submitted and reaffirm eligibility. Although GAO decisions have often treated missing NAICS information as a minor informality, contractors should notify the contracting officer promptly and document that corrective action has been taken.

Best Practices for Protecting Your SAM Registration

  • Review SAM profiles monthly instead of relying solely on annual renewals.
  • Maintain an up-to-date capabilities statement that clearly connects services to relevant NAICS codes and SINs.
  • Ensure that SAM is always active as it connects to other contract-related systems and subsystems. For example, GSA Schedule contractors will not be able to submit contract modifications with an inactive SAM Registration.
  • Verify your Dynamic Small Business Search (DSBS) profile after making updates to ensure your capabilities remain accurately represented.

SAM.gov has confirmed that the system error has been corrected. Even so, contractors should verify that their registration information is complete and accurate, especially if they renewed their registration between March 24 and July 22, 2026. Reviewing the registration now and correcting any missing or inaccurate information can help prevent delays and minimize disruptions to future contracting opportunities.

Because SAM.gov registration data feeds multiple federal procurement systems, contractors should treat their registration as a living compliance document rather than something reviewed only during annual renewals. If your organization is dealing with this SAM.gov data issue, or any challenges with entity registrations, professional guidance can make a significant difference.
